Consultants will be guided through the data collection process when gathering data for Memphis, Tennessee. Consultants will be expected to collect data for their assigned city independently. The guide below should be consulted before asking the project facilitator for additional assistance.
1. Use only resources that come are reliable, credible and accurate. (Website Evaluation Form)
2. Decide upon a method of recording, organizing and keeping data. For this project, consultants have been provided a Data Collection Sheet in the Consultant Guidebook. Keep up with this sheet as it will be turned in to your facilitator as part of your final report.
3. Use Weather Underground Website for all data collection . The site will open in a new tab. Record Website Title, URL and date on Data Collection Sheet. It is imperative whenever collecting information and data from any source that all necessary source data is recorded.
4. Enter city name in Weather Underground Search box as it was given to you. Click on the search button to go to the data page for that city.
6. Locate the Latitude, Longitude, and Elevation Information at the top of the city data page and record the information in the appropriate spaces on the Data Collection Sheet. Be sure to record continent information for city also. Use the map you printed for reference if you are not sure of the continent information.
7. Scroll down the city data page to the Forecast Section. Locate the View Calendar Link. Click on this link to view actual collected data for previous days in the month.
8. Scroll down city calendar page to section titled Monthly Calendar Overview. Use Previous Month link to scroll back to desired dates.
9. For this project, Teachers Travel has requested that we research conditions during the first week of August so students will scroll back to the last August where data is recorded.
10. Once you have located the appropriate month, locate the data for the appropriate week. (In the diagram below, an alternate month is displayed to illustrate and describe the data available on the website.) Record the necessary data on the data collection sheet making sure that you record all units. (See example below.)
11. Repeat the above procedure to collect a second set of data for your assigned city for comparison.
